Born Roger Clayon Hylton to Miss Ava Patricia Walters on 26th May 1990; Sonex started his young life in the area of Jones Town (also known as Jungle), Kingston 12, Jamaica, a bustling area bordering Trench Town with 4 older brothers, sister, nieces and nephews aunt and uncle all lived close by.
From a tender age, yet in a not so tender place he was always observing quietly, listening attentively to anything that his eyes seen and ears heard and by two years old was in Jackson Basic School. He showed much intelligence for his young age, and stayed focused as his school years took him through Jones Town Primary School.
At the age of ten, he was already showing DJ’ing skills and his observations turned into freestyle rhymes, most often voiced over the sound of his big brothers rhythmic palms beating the school desk and clashing another budding DJ across the room, which was common in schools especially the areas of Jones Town and Trench Town.
By the time he reached Trench Town High he had his first taste of performing outside the classroom where his own song was well received by his audience. Friends and family advised him to find a producer. A recording studio & label known as ‘writers recording ink’ was on his very street and seemed a good place to start. There, writer/producer/manager Patrick Jackson helped him release his first solo track in 2005. ‘No More War’ dropped in the middle of the 4 year war within the vicinity of Jungle. Inner City Radio Station ‘Roots FM’ promptly picked up the song for their airwaves.

The next couple of years saw Sonex retreat back into writing, graduating and focusing on his family, following the birth of his first born daughter. Working to help support the costs of living took priority over recording for a while.
However, a local producer Richard ‘Midnyte’ Harris was starting out and gave Sonex a riddim to voice over. Though the track wasn’t released, the pair worked well together and struck up a working relationship that continues till today. Midnytes base provided a place for Sonex to write, freestyle and have an input into the overall sound whilst Midnyte composed and built the tracks around his vocals.
Shortly after Sonex joined with Manifest Media Management and the rest as they say is history!
Sonex is ready for the stage and the airwaves again with his upcoming release ‘Make a Muckle’.
